Overview:

 Gymnema sylvestre is an Ayurvedic botanical and is described as a destroyer of madhumeha (glycosuria) and helps with urinary disorders. Gymnema also manages healthy blood glucose levels, it is also called Gurmar (Destroyer of Sugar). 

The active compound of the plant is a group of acids termed Gymnemic acids. These have been identified to be useful in healthy glucose metabolism, in numerous animal and human studies.

Gymnema extract may assist in the normal regeneration and repair of healthy pancreatic beta cells and reduce intestinal glucose absorption.

Gymnema increases the activity of enzymes responsible for glucose uptake and utilization and is reported to be effective in lowering fasting as well as postprandial blood glucose levels. Gymnema extract also has the potential to support healthy lipid and triglyceride metabolism.

Gymnemic acid formulations have also been found useful against obesity, this has been attributed to the ability of gymnemic acids to delay the glucose absorption in the blood.

In India, Gymnema can usually be found in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.

Though sandy loam soil is best for its cultivation, it may be cultivated on a variety of soils including gravelled soil.

February to March is the best season for planting the cuttings. The leaves that are about 30–40 days old are usually plucked for use, and harvesting is done every three months. However, better yield is obtained after one year of growth.
